Our Approach

We start with the farmer, then build the food system around them. Mumita did not begin with a factory. It began with farmer groups, and everything the group has added since stands on that base.

Farmer groups

We started with farmer groups

Our first job was organising farmers around tropical staples: plantain, cassava, maize, pineapple and tomatoes. Today smallholders are grouped into clusters by crop and by region.

Each cooperative gets training, inputs, links to buyers and a set way of bringing the harvest together. Farmers, especially young people and women, are trained to own and lead the group, not only to grow for it.

Training and inputs

Training and inputs come before the harvest

Our trainers work in English, French and local dialects, on climate-smart farming, group marketing, financial literacy and crop protection.

Agronomists plan inputs from a soil analysis and follow the crop through the season. Planting material comes from IRAD and from specialised cooperatives.

After the harvest

From harvest to cold room to factory

Less food lost between the field and the shelf.

Cold rooms

After harvest, produce is graded, pre-processed and kept in our cold rooms, so less of it spoils before it reaches a buyer. Other producers can rent the space too.

Who does what

Proof, not promises

Records at every step

We keep records at every step, with mobile data collection, GPS mapping, SMS surveys and plain logbooks. They track yields, inputs, training, market prices and what changes for the people involved.

Products carry QR batch codes that lead back to where they were grown.
